    ドイツの児童文学者ケストナーの代表作。ドイツの高等中学校（ギムナジウム）を舞台に、5人の1年生の学校での日々、友情などが描かれている。また、彼らの担任である正義先生ことヨハン・ベクと学校の近くの廃車になった禁煙車に住む禁煙先生のサイドストーリーも素晴らしい。 書名の「飛ぶ教室」は、1年生のヨナタンが書いたクリスマス劇のタイトルで、作中で演じられる。 実家の貧しさ、自身の肉体的弱さへの苦悩、親との関係など、思春期に多くの人が抱く悩みを5人の登場人物を通じて浮き彫りにしている。
