    　僅か10pの超短編の中にもフォークナーの独特の奥行きと陰湿さが感じられる。肥った醜い男の若く美しい妻への嫉妬。彼が勤勉で真面目であるほどに、嫉妬が嫌悪に変質し、殺気に昇華する様は、冷酷にすら映る。展開がシンプルで短いが故に、異様な恐怖を覚えてしまう。
