    『月長石』と並ぶ著者の代表作で、ミステリー黎明期の傑作。主人公のハートライトは絵画教師。リマリッジ館に仕事に赴くが、そこでハルカムとローラという姉妹と知り合う。美しいローラに強く惹かれるハートライトだが、彼女には婚約者がいる…。 総計で約1100ページの長さ、読み始めると語り手がどんどん変わること、などがあるものの、総じて読みやすく面白い。150年前に刊行されているし、設定もあって、やや古びた感はあるものの、最後まで飽きさせることはない。 全体として魅力的なのはハルカム。彼女の知性の輝きが全編を貫いている。
