Product Description

This selection received a Grammy Award nomination for "Best Opera
Recording."
Based on one of Herman Melville's most famous seafaring stories, it is only fitting the opera should originate England, ruler of the waves. Benjamin Britten's talent for high drama, matched with his deep understanding of the allegories and subtexts involved in Melville's novella, made him the perfect composer for the job.
Written in the early 1950's, the music has a very contemporary feel. Swelling like waves on the high seas, the rich tones rise to trembling heights then fall away precipitously. The all male cast features tenor Philip Langridge as Captain Vere and baritone Simon Keenlyside as Budd himself. John Tomlinson's deep bass is perfect for the role of the villain Claggart. These three all carry weighty roles with great spiritedness. Along with the vigorous performance of the London Symphony Orchestra and Chorus, the singers bring this vital story alive.
Reviews:
Opera News (9/00, p.89) - "...Simon Keenlyside sings the title role solidly, beautifully in fact, with...balanced poise....Hickox offers exceptional insight into the dramatic meaning of musical details, brilliantly played by his orchestra..."
