Displaced

This album was recorded over a period of 16 months in a tiny home studio in the slums of Kiev, Ukraine. As the result of painstaking attention to detail Nicky Rubin and his engineer Sergei Keen have produced an album rich in musical diversity. The songs although being very catchy are never very far away from being dark, moody and romantic. Sadness is often disguised by an upbeat rhythm and melody. The album favours an organic production style and uses the deep register of Rubin's voice with female harmonies a la Bowie and Leonard Cohen. Due to Rubin's itinerant lifestyle both the music and the lyrics have hints of world music but this is not a world music album. If anything this is adult alternative dark pop rock at it's best. Rubin has the uncanny ability to reach into the hearts and minds of people he has never met.
