There can't be that many people who pass up a place a social anthropology course in order to pursue a career in MC-ing, but that's exactly what Niomi McLean-Daley did. And, having so nearly sold her soul to a proper education, either the nascent Ms D was either rock solid in her own self-belief or a few sandwiches short. Some years on, however and the divine Ms Dynamite releases her solo debut album on a major UK label.
'My Boo' we all know about (garage producer Sticky's vehicle,in truth, but still a step up for Niomi) and the 'It Takes More' single was cool but it's 'A Little Deeper' that we've all been waiting for. Produced in the UK and in Jamaica, who ever oversaw the project has certainly treated it with due care and attention. Producer Salamm Remi's work with the likes of The Fugees was both credible and inspired whilst dancehall king Dave Kelly is behind some of J.A.'s most enduring rude bwoy stylings. Both are on board here. Plus, there's also a fair sweep of pop nuggets on show with tracks like 'Now You Want My Love' and 'Dyna-Mi-Tee' profiling the kind of mercurial radio-friendly compositions that will seduce anyone with a soul. In general, the UK record industry hasn't been that kind to our urban divas. Let's hope
