ニューヨーク水産局で魚の鑑定士をしているアクセルは、空飛ぶ魚の幻想に取り憑かれ、いつかは広大なアラスカでオヒョウを釣り上げることを夢見ている。ある日のこと、友人のポールと大酒を飲み目を覚ますと、そこはアリゾナだった。ポールに騙され連れ出されたのだ。アクセルは、アメリカンドリームを信じキャデラックのディーラーをしている叔父から仕事のパートナーを依頼され、しばらくアリゾナに留まることにする。そんなある日、アクセルは店で未亡人のエレインとその義理の娘グレースと出会う。親子ほど年の違うエレインに恋したアクセルは、彼女の夢が空を飛ぶことだと知って飛行機づくりに没頭する。一方グレースもアクセルの気を引こうとするが、彼女には自殺願望があり、亀に生まれ変わるのが夢だった。こうして3人の奇妙な同居生活が始まる…。
