東海岸ではビ・バップすなわち即興演奏（ホット）が主流だったこの時代に、編曲とグループで表現することを重視した西海岸風「クール・ジャズ」を引っ提げてマイルス（ジェリー・マリガン、ギル・エヴァンス、ジョン・ルイスら編曲者陣）が作り上げた歴史的な名盤。この「クール」精神はその後の西海岸のジャズにおいて重要なテーマとなる。スキのない編曲や楽団の一体感も見事。一曲一曲が短いので、退屈しないで楽しめる。
