Product Description

Smallcreep's Day is the first solo studio album by Genesis guitarist Mike Rutherford. The 24-minute title track is based on the 1965 novel Smallcreep's Day by Peter Currell Brown which tells the story of Mr. Smallcreep. Rutherford has recruited some prog heavyweights to serve as his band here like Anthony Phillips on the keyboards, Noel McCalla (Manfred Manns Earth Band 1991-2009) vocals, Morris Pert (Brand X & later Talk Talk) provides percussion, and the estimable Simon Phillips (Ten CC, The Who, Toto a.o.) is behind the drum kit, thundering away on his trademark double bass drums. From the opening Moonshine with its trademark Rutherford bass pedals, and infectious keyboards to closing At the End of the Day the album is moving and anthemic.

この作品を聴くと、実は彼がジェネシスサウ...

この作品を聴くと、実は彼がジェネシスサウンドの要なのではないかと強く思わせる。仲間メンバー達の同時期のソロ作品らと比べると明らかに最も「ジェネシス」に近い。同名タイトルの組曲メドレーの出来も良く、長年工場で働きずくめのおじさん物語には共感さえ覚える。全体的に切なくもどこか前向きさが感じられる。ソロ作品とは思えない程の傑作。

いろんなロックグループのメンバーがソロアルバムを出し始めた頃、（極端に言うと、まぁ余技的なソロだからこの程度で水準作、というゆるい評価で通っていた頃、）「いわゆる」ソロの水準を越えたアルバムとして高い評価を得た名作。もともとベーシストだったラザフォード（S・ﾊｹｯﾄ在席時のgenesisでも時々12弦ｷﾞﾀｰを弾いてはいたようですが・・）が、ｿﾝｸﾞﾗｲﾃｨﾝｸﾞと、ｷﾞﾀｰ、ﾍﾞｰｽを弾きまくるｺﾝｾﾌﾟﾄｱﾙﾊﾞﾑ。（ｾﾘﾝｸﾞ･ｲﾝｸﾞﾗﾝﾄﾞ･ﾊﾞｲ･ｻﾞ･ﾊﾟｳﾝﾄﾞと共通のﾃｰﾏ）。この作品での成功が、後のﾏｲｸ･ｱﾝﾄﾞ･ﾒｶﾆｯｸｽの成功に繋がったのは言うまでも無いことでしょう。

マイクのファーストソロはかなり完成されたコンセプトアルバムです。ジャケも美しく素晴らしいです。是非ともＳＡＣＤ紙ジャケ化して欲しい作品です！朋友アンソニーフィリップスも参加。
