Phrygid Aire

The key word in the name of our band, The Metrowest Jazz Project, is 'project.' We play straight-ahead jazz with a twist, trying something new with each tune, pushing the envelope of what we had tried before. Our tunes have a variety of time signatures, and we like to experiment with the different feels that they provide, as well as exploring different styles in standard meters. Each one has a specific idea behind it; for example, Phrygid Aire is a high-energy exploration of the phrygian mode, Just a Tad has a hint of the music of Tad Dameron, Thirteenth Floor is in a fast 13/8, and No Electric Bill has a broken meter, changing bar to bar. The instrumentation of the band is somewhat unusual, consisting of sax/flute, vibes, bass and drums. This gives the music an open, airy feel. With each tune we write, we try to take advantage of this instrumentation, utilizing space carefully and taking advantage of the unique blend of the vibes with the sax and flute. We thoroughly enjoyed putting this album together, and we hope you experience our enthusiasm as we share this music with you. Enjoy!
