JAZZ初心者ですが、ジャケットとタイトルののカッコ良さに惹かれ、レビューに目を留めて読んでみたところ、これは名盤のひとつではないかと思い、早速購入してみました。内容は、その期待を裏切ることなく、じっくりと聴かせてくれるものでした。タイトルの「Midnight Blue」の言葉からイメージされる、“落ち着き”“渋さ”“心地良さ”がじっくりと染み渡ってくる中身でした。何もわからない私のような初心者でさえ、大満足の作品でした。もっと早くに、この作品に出会えなかったのは、自分の未熟さだったからと痛感しています。

ギタリストの作品はギタリストへの物（美味しいテクニカルフレーズ満載とかそういうもの）とそうでない物に分かれますが、この作品は後者の代表作でしょう。曲自体は殆んど普通のブルースです。普通のギタリストは代理コード、アウトフレーズ、速弾き等々を隙有らば出そうとするのですが、バレルは淡々と渋い素朴なブルースを弾いていきます（だから要所で出てくる小難しいのが栄える）。1曲目のイントロのあとの出だしちょっと歪むギターのフレーズがカッコ良過ぎます（簡単なフレーズですけどあの味が 出ないんですよねー）。まさに夜の音楽。
