ジョニにとって2作目のライヴ・アルバムであり、アサイラム・レコード在籍時最後の作品となったのが、この『SHADOWS AND LIGHT』だ。『MINGUS』のツアーから、1979年9月のサンタバーバラ・ボウルで行われたパフォーマンスを収録したもので、ジョニの名曲である「Woodstock」を除き、「Amelia」や「Dreamland」、「The Dry Cleaner From Des Moines」といった新しい楽曲に焦点を当てた内容となっている。バックを固めるのはジャコ・パストリアス（b）、パット・メセニー（g）、ドン・アライアス（dr）、ライル・メイズ（piano）、マイケル・ブレッカー（sax）といった、錚々たる名手ばかりだ。また、60年代に人気を博したヴォーカル・グループ、ザ・パースエイションズも「Shadows and Light」と「Why Do Fools Fall In Love」の2曲に参加している。
