The Song I Never Wrote draws from some of Elias' other, more subtle jazz influences. On this tune he proves soul can emerge regardless of the delivery system. NPR happened as a fluke. Jack Rock, the owner of The Treefort studio, had just purchased an old Farfisa organ I had written the tune NPR a few years earlier, intending it to be a chamber jazz piece with woodwinds and jazz quartet. The sound of the Farfisa inspired me to pull it up on my laptop and quickly re-score the woodwind parts to organ, and, just like that this version was born! You Can Never Hold Back Spring is a perfect example of Tom Waits' songwriting genius. His performance of this song on his record Orphans, Brawlers, Bawlers and Bastards is grizzled and raw, complete with out-of-tune piano and growling clarinet.
