前作『蒼い肖像(Blue Moves)』発表後、活動休止宣言をしたこともあって約2年のブランクを経て届けられた新作が本作『シングル・マン』だった（1978年発表）。バーニー・トーピンとのコンビを解消し、ゲイリー・オズボーンと組んだことをはじめ、プロデューサーやメンバーも大幅に変更しての作品で、新たな気分で取り組んだものとも言えるが、ある意味問題作とも言えたことは否めない。
