Product Description

Digitally remastered release containing a pair of previously unreleased 1960s performances by Don Cherry in a quintet format. The first show was recorded in Denmark in 1963, and showcases the New York Contemporary Five, featuring Cherry with Archie Shepp, John Tchicai, Don Moore and J.C. Moses. The second presents the trumpeter paired with Argentinean saxophonist Gato Barbieri in 1966. Free Factory.

1963年は所謂アーチー・シェップ、ジョン・チカイを要したニューヨークコンテンポラリーファイブのライブ録音である。1966年の録音はガトー・ガブリエルを要した多国籍バンドである。双方の録音ともだいぶ内容が異なる。ニューヨークコンテンポラリーファイブは各々の活動初期でありフリージャズ自体も黎明期ということもあってかパーソナルの奇抜さとは裏腹に普通にソロを回す今の耳で聴くと割と普通の(とはいえ個々のプレイはフリーだが)ジャズに聞こえる。後者のバンドは正にチェリーが集団即興演奏を志向し始めた時期になるので個々の演奏者が入り乱れる内容となっている。両バンドとも幾つかの録音が残されているので聴き比べてみるのも楽しいかも知れない。
