Sir Simon Rattle is an English conductor who rose to international prominence during the 1980s and 1990s while Music Director of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. He became principal conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic in 2002. The Berlin Philharmonic was founded in 1882 and is consistently ranked as one of the best orchestras in the world.
