Product Description

The hard-driving sound of the Collin Shook Trio is a fresh departure from the Tucson jazz scene. The Trio's first album, 'Derivatives', features eleven of Collin's own originals. The songs range from breakbeat, hard-bop, ballads, to extreme high energy passages. On the album is their 3-piece '#Occupy Suite', an ode to the movement and it's principles. 'Derivatives', the title track is a commentary on Wall Street, and 'Poca Cosa, the little one' is a burning latin tune composed for the Davila Sisters and their awesome, authentic Mexican restaurant in the heart of Tucson. The album contains their signature sound: the classic Hard Bop from the 1960's, fused with a modern and classically influenced vocabulary and sensibility. Dylan DeRobertis on bass, and Matt Pirc completes the ensemble. With Dylan's firm roots in double bass and it's musicality (he holds a Masters in performance from Indiana University) and Matt's hyper-creative energy and sensitive dynamics, the band interweaves their own opinions to create a conversation that brings out an evolving fourth voice. Collin's approach to the keyboard changes from a lyrical right hand and supporting chords, to poly-rhythmic, multiple voice, angular shapes. Collin teamed up with Matt Pirc (drums) and Dylan DeRobertis (double bass) in the Fall of 2010, where they began writing and performing original music.
