Christian Pincock

Christian Pincock's compositional approach is similar to the working process of a sculptor in that he refines his pieces by removing layers of material leaving only the most important and integral elements. This is true for each of the pieces on his second CD release, Plentiful Excitement as realized by pianist Robert Muller, tubist Mark Weaver and drummer Rick Compton. The refinement process of these pieces ranges from one to ten years as multiple revisions, tested out with multiple configurations of musicians, have been solidified and documented here on this recording. Christian began to develop his process through his studies with the late trombonist and composer Bob Brookmeyer, with whom he studied at New England Conservatory in the early 2000s. Since then he has explored a multitude of styles and techniques including the formal development techniques of Baroque and European Classical music; the rhythmic structures of samba, merengue, salsa, Hindustani music, and contemporary classical music; and the melodic and timbral possibilities of electronic music and free improvisation. His compositions, which are at the same time both lyrical and energetic, integrate these influences subtly and organically and feature lively improvisations and interactions between the players. Christian has performed original music at venues and festivals across the United States including The Stone (NYC), Roulette (NYC), The Creative Soundspace Festival at The Outpost Performance Space (Albuquerque), The Society for the Activation of Social Space through Art and Sound (Los Angeles), The Roost Creative Music Festival (Albuquerque) and The Ballard Jazz Festival (Seattle). In addition Christian Pincock has shared the stage with well-known artists including Bobby Shew, Bob Brookmeyer, Toshiko Akiyoshi, Lew Tabackin, John Faddis, Butch Miles, Dave Douglas, Ikue Mori, Doug Lawrence, John Lockwood and George Garzone.
