Genre: rock. Wrong. This is not a rock record. Who could categorize it? Nat Hentoff? Mother Maybelle Carter? Bootsy Collins? Chris O'Connell picked songs written by friends like LeRoy Preston, Blackie Farrell, Brenda Burns, Bill Kirchen, and mixed in some hardly-standards of jazz and r&b, threw in a couple of Broadway show tunes, and then tapped great players to fit each song. There was one rule: if the song didn't make her cry or laugh out loud it wasn't on the short list. Some of these songs will be familiar to the listener in an eerie sort of way; others should come to be included among classics of their own genres. After 42 years as a sideman, Chris finally steps out front to share favorite songs about the good and the bad of all kinds of love. Try them out while you're working on a dance step, or walking to the bus, or cruising with the top down, or kickin a bad habit, or plotting a first kiss, or nursing an unearned insult, or washing a dog, or just wishing on a star.
