  言いたいことは二つ。 一つ目は、言うまでもなく文体の素晴らしさだ。何気ない部分を読んでいるだけで感動があり、気づきがある。僕はMrs. LorlingとMarloweの会話が特に好きだ。オーバーナイトバッグを投げ捨てるとMarloweが怒鳴る部分は、男と女の「探り合い」みたいなしようもない駆け引きに対する気持ちがすかっと表現されていてとても良い。 二つ目はキャラクターに奥深い魅力が潜んでいる点だ。Marloweの格好良さはわざわざ言うまでもない。しかしこの作品には彼と同じくらいシックな人物が現れる。それが

  With three names that started with V.... Phooey. Why not V for facial feature? “But he shouldn't have said Slade instead of Wade.” It was good for Dr Verringer to have said like that instead of Spade. He was an intelligent man. No pulp. No Maltese Falcon.
