Nas's proteges Jungle and Wiz came up from the same Queensbridge, New York streets as their mentor, as evidenced by the stripped down, raw, gritty sound of their debut, BRAVEHEARTED. Both the album's opening "B Train" and the title track feature a considerable nod to 1980s hip-hop in their over-amped beatbox rhythms, though the rest of the cuts are decidedly more contemporary.
The duo's rhymes are full of hopes for fame set against the realities of New York street life ("Twilight"), while the production is minimalist, as with the simple, insinuating keyboard line to the album's most oddly atmospheric track, "Buss My Guns." There's a heartbreaking simplicity to the Bravehearts' quest for fame ("First the studio, then a video, then we do a show, count my cash flow...jump in the Range Ro'...") that stands in stark contrast to their hardcore street personas. Primitive and visceral, BRAVEHEARTED is a snapshot of the dreams and realities of life in the New York projects.
