Forget the fact that Boomkat is a male-female outfit like the White Stripes and that lead singer Taryn Manning has made her hay as an actress in TV's BOSTON PUBLIC and in Eminem's film debut 8 MILE. Instead, accept this album as a successful attempt at multi-faceted pop pumped full of clever beats and sly hooks, and featuring a singer whose come-hither phrasing is not unlike Divinyls chanteuse Christina Amphlett. Half the fun of this debut is playing Spot The Influence. Between the robotic voice and uniquely spelled title, the shuffling electro-pop of "What U Do 2 Me" screams Prince. Meredith Brooks-meets-TLC defines the clattering shout-out-fest "Crazylove," and there's just a snatch of the Beatles' "I Am The Walrus" tacked onto the intro of the sing-songy "Now Understand This." These siblings are even cheeky enough to kick off the album with "Yo!verture," an ethereal rap intro that doubles as the duo's theme song. Balancing out Boomkat's more rhythm-driven cuts are songs like the sensitive ballad "Wastin' My Time" and "Daydreamin'," an autobiographical slice of airy dance-pop.
