Just when the Beach Boys were emerging as the pre-eminent American rock & roll band, they released this casual but spirited live record complete with (dubbed?) screaming girls. It does give us a chance to assess the Boys' entertaining stage show circa 1964, curiously light on original material but replete with cover versions which shed some light on their musical roots. Besides Dick Dale's "Let's Go Trippin," which gives Carl Wilson a chance to show off some flashy Fender licks, there's a heartfelt version of the Four Freshmen's "Graduation Day," a song from which Brian Wilson learned all he needed to know about harmony, vocal and otherwise.
