America first rode to fame in 1972 with the Billboard #1 pop smash 'A Horse with No Name.' That same year, they won the GRAMMY Award for Best New Artist, and also enjoyed success with 'I Need You,' another hit single from their self-titled debut album. Gerry Beckley, Dewey Bunnell-who continue to record and tour with America and Dan Peek (who left the band in '77) built an enduring legacy for the group as soft-rock standard bearers, and their mellow blend of rock, pop, and folk remains one of it's essential sounds. Among their other beautifully crafted, melodic hits included in this all-new collection are the timeless favorites 'Ventura Highway,' 'Lonely People,' and 'Tin Man.'

アメリカの魅力といえばやはり、ポップなメロディに爽やかなハーモニーと素朴なアコースティック・サウンドだろう。クロスビー、スティルス、ナッシュ＆ヤングと比較されることが多いが、アメリカの方がポップでメロディアスなので、わかりやすい。 このアルバムDefinitive Pop Collectionはワーナー在籍時に発表されたアルバム7枚とシングルからセレクトされている。 America(’72年) Homecoming(’72年) Hat Trick(’73年) Holiday(’74年) Hearts(’75年) Hideaway(’76年) Harbor(’77年) シングルA Horse With No NameのB面　Everyone I Meet Is From California RHINO編集のこのCDはちゃんとしたライナーノーツが付いていて（輸入盤だから当然英語）音質も良好、さすがにRHINOはいい仕事をする。 リマスタリングはDan Hersch ＆ Bill Inglot at DigiPrep　 アメリカのベスト盤はいろいろ出ていて、やはりRHINO編集のザ・デフィニティヴ・アメリカ(’01年)があるが、こちらはCD1枚で彼らの全キャリアと網羅しているが、2枚組のボリュームで精力的に活動していた時代から選曲したこのCDの方が個人的に好みである。
