デジタル・アンダーグラウンドのメンバーを経て、サグ・ライフ、そしてソロに転向した伝説的ラッパー。本名はTupac Amaru Shakur。本作は「インタースコープ」から「デス・ロウ」に移籍しての第1弾アルバムにして、ラップ史上初の2枚組。通算では4枚目のアルバム。このアルバムの直前にはブラック・ムーヴィー「ポエティック・ジャスティス」「ジュース」「アバヴ・ザ・リム」にも出演。まさに彼が人気の頂点にあるタイミングでの発売となった大作である。もはや詳しい説明も不要だろう。全米で900万枚のセールスをあげた20世紀の名盤の1枚であり、チャートはポップで2週連続1位、R&Bでは3週連続、しかもR&Bチャートでは103週間チャートにエントリーされるという大記録も残している。リリースは96年の2月で、これからおよそ7ヶ月後の9月7日にラス・ヴェガスで何者かに狙撃され、1週間後の9月13日に他界。享年25歳。今なおその人気は衰えることをしらない。

当時の西の代表作の一枚だが、衝撃度は「Doggystyle」や「’93 Til Infinity」よりは劣る。もうクラシックになったが、今聴き返しても古臭さを感じない。ラップせずに普通に歌ったほうが良いような曲が何曲かあるが、スキルとかを考えないほうが気持ちよく聴ける。
