This is the ideal disc for listeners previously not exposed to the extensive classical guitar repertoire. Guitarist Manuel Barrueco takes us on a wonderful musical journey through South America that is transforming. From obscure folk melodies to the popular "Estrellita," Barrueco plays with the kind of pure, crystalline sound that brings a myriad of thoughts and emotions to the surface. His amazing technique, gorgeous sound and intimate musicality are overwhelming and natural.
The inclusion of the Villa-Lobos 'Bachianas brasilieras No. 5' (originally scored for eight cellos and soprano) is most welcome. The synergy between Barrueco and beautiful soprano Barbara Hendricks is right on the money, resulting in a performance filled with poignancy, humor and awe. Another highlight on the disc is Astor Piazzolla's 'Histoire du tango' in four movements, where Barrueco teams with flutist Emmanuel Pahud to create the sultry ambience necessary for the rhythm and mood of the tango. Barrueco must be congratulated for the overall programming of this disc, as each selection melds perfectly into the next.
