Sir Neville Marriner and his Academy made some of the most priceless recordings of Vaughan Williams for Decca and Philips, and this collection restores to circulation his Philips traversal of music by this composer, with the addition of five pieces made for Decca - the Romance for harmonica (with Tommy Reilly), possibly the best version of the Lark Ascending ever recorded (with the late Iona Brown), his second recording of Fantasia on Greensleeves, the Concerto Grosso and the English Folk Song Suite. The collection is filled out with the nine perky folk song arrangements he recorded, receiving their first international release on CD.

イギリス民謡のアレンジがステキです。のどかな田園風景が浮かんできそうな曲たち。アカデミーの演奏は、美しい弦のアンサンブルと上品な表現で好感が持てます。もちろん、他の曲も素晴らしい。疲れた心を、そっと癒してくれますよ。余談ですが……、アレンジのいくつかは、（金管奏者にはおなじみの）組曲「３匹の猫」などの作曲家であるクリス・ヘイゼルが手掛けているんですね。

Marriner and the ASMF are in top form on this compilation of Vaughan Williams’ shorter orchestral pieces, which might otherwise be difficult to find in one place. The sound is gratifying, rich and clear. The playing is excellent and the interpretations are both passionate and pastoral. I recommend this set to newcomers and collectors alike. The arrangements of folk songs (by other composers) are an interesting bonus.

ＣＤ－１ももちろんいいですが、ＣＤ－２の民謡編曲集がなかなかいい＾＾　原曲を大切にし、少し軽めのクラシック風のアレンジながらなかなか奥の深い音楽になっています。時々出てくるフーガが印象的。
