Product Description

Kurt Weill remains one of the true iconoclasts within classical music. In this adaptation of John Gay's BEGGAR'S OPERA, Weill invokes cabaret and dance bands of the 1920's, deliberately undercutting the prim and proper tradition of both the story and music. Together with playwright Bertold Brecht, he turned 'The Threepenny Opera' into a sociopolitical commentary on contemporary society and invented what is now known as "fringe" theater.
Weill's creation differs from traditional opera in many ways, not the least of which is the way it lends itself to untrained voices. Conservatory-style performances would sound drastically out of place within these compositions. Instead, raw vocals heighten the bawdy appeal of the music.
There have been performances of 'The Threepenny Opera' that approach the proceedings with great respect and ceremony, but that defeats the purpose. Ute Lemper shows her understanding of Weill's vital irreverence. Her star performance within this ensemble cast is a pleasure to behold.
