Although the clarinet cannot lay claim to a body of chamber music as large as that for other instruments, it can boast of the virtues of quality over quantity. The 20th century brought more music for the instrument than the 18th or 19th, but here David Shifrin and the Emerson String Quartet present two pre-1900 gems, both justly famous.
Mozart's Quintet is well-known and loved for the elegant melody of its opening, it's sublime Larghetto, and its perky variation-form finale. Shifrin and the Emerson give it a strong performance with excellent ensemble, showcasing the work rather than themselves.
Late in life, Brahms had decided to stop composing, but came to know the clarinet by way of Meiningen clarinetist Richard Muehlfeld and was inspired to produce his Quintet as well as the Clarinet Trio and the two sonatas. Here it receives a sensitive reading by five players well-versed in the subtleties of chamber music performance. This pair of works makes an excellent program, and the performances could hardly be bettered.

クラリネット五重奏曲の二大名曲であるモーツァルト及びブラームスによる同曲の組み合わせは、カプリングの定番とも言うべきものであり、古くはウラッハ盤をはじめライスター、プリンツ、最近でのマイヤーなどに至るまで、錚々たるクラリネット奏者によって数多くの演奏・録音が行われてきた。したがって、これら海千山千のクラリネット奏者による数々の名演の中で存在感を発揮するのは並大抵の演奏では困難であると言えるが、本盤におさめられたシフリンによる演奏は、エマーソン弦楽四重奏団による名サポートも得て、その音楽性の豊かさにおいて十分に存在感のある名演に仕上がっていると高く評価したい。シフリンのクラリネットの魅力は、卓越したテクニックはさることながら、その明瞭で腰の据わった音色ということになるであろう。高音から低音に至るまで芯が一本通った力強さが漲っており、いかなる再弱音に至っても曖昧模糊としたところがないのが素晴らしい。他方、モーツァルトによる同曲に込められた晩年の寂寥感や悲哀感、ブラームスによる同曲に込められた孤独な独身男性の孤独感などもその明瞭な音色から滲み出てきており、表現力においてもいささかも不足はなく、いい意味での剛柔バランスのとれた重厚な演奏が持ち味と言える。なお、シフリンには、本盤の約１０年前の１９８４年にもチェンバー・ミュージック・ノースウェストと組んでモーツァルトのクラリネット五重奏曲を録音しているが（デロス）、円熟味といい、演奏の彫の深さといい、断然本演奏の方を上位に掲げたい。エマーソン弦楽四重奏団も、シフリンの明瞭かつ表情豊かで重厚なクラリネットをしっかりと支えつつ、おそらくは両曲の演奏としてもトップの座を争うような最美の演奏を展開しているのが素晴らしい。録音は、従来盤でも十分に満足できる音質ではあったが、今般のＳＨＭ－ＣＤ化によって音質がさらに鮮明になるとともに、音場が幅広くなった。シフリン＆エマーソン弦楽四重奏団による至高の名演を、ＳＨＭ－ＣＤによる高音質で味わうことができるのを大いに歓迎したい。
