なかなか人気の出ないプフィッツナー。その代表作である「パレストリーナ」の代表盤はこれ。出演者の大半が男であり、恋愛なしで宗教と政争の入り乱れるストーリーは対訳なしではかなりきつい。それでも後期ロマン派のオペラを好む人にはぜひお勧めしたい。プフィッツナーの真摯な音楽は聞きこむほど心を揺さぶるものがある。フィッシャー＝ディースカウが当たり役でプライ、ヴァイクルもいい。クーベリックの指揮は、第２幕での盛り上がりがもうひとつ。
