Product Description

Being the products of a time when high culture flourished both inside and outside the church, Baroque period masses are particularly inspirational. This premiere recording of Biber's 'Missa bruxellensis' captures the majesty of the music as it was originally experienced at the end of the 17th Century.
More commonly known for his instrumental music than for his sacred works, Biber makes deft use of the chorus, creating lush harmonies. In 'Missa bruxellensis,' it's the voices that take the listener closer to the heavens, not an authoritarian pipe organ or regal trumpeters. Biber uses his instrumentation to reinforce the authority of the chorus.
Recorded in Salzburg Cathedral, to which Biber was assigned as a liturgical composer, this album resounds with historic and musical significance. Acoustically ideal for this endeavor, the cathedral lends its distinction to a wonderfully vibrant performance.
REVIEWS:
Fanfare (5-6/00, pp.78-81) - "...Savall shows a real flair for this kind of music....If you liked the 'Salzburg Mass,' you'll really love this one. If you stayed away from the other one for some reason, give this a hearing. It's a winner..."
