ロシアに生まれて教育を受けた作曲家アラ・パヴロヴァは後にアメリカに移住し、映画音楽や舞踏音楽から劇場にいたる、様々なメディアのために幅広い音楽を書きました。「スラミス組曲」はアレクサンドル・クプリンによる、ソロモン王と女奴隷スラミスを扱った劇的で感動的な恋愛物語を基にした同名のバレエからの抜粋曲集です。「オールド・ニューヨーク・ノスタルジア」は、大都市生活の外観を描写したもので、「ツインタワーのためのララバイ」楽章を含むことで痛切さが一層際立っています。この楽章は、9・11テロ事件の後に、犠牲者追悼のために作曲されました。パヴロヴァの交響曲第1番〜第4番は、ナクソス8.557157と8.557566で耳にすることができます。

ロシアで育ちのちにアメリカに渡った１９５２生まれ女流。このような純度の高い抒情的な曲を聞くと、逆にアメリカの混沌のなかで生きている哀愁みたいなものを思ってしまう。しかしもしかすると素直にそのまま聞けばいいだけなのかもしれない。うすめのテクスチュアでジャズ調も交えやさしく鳴り響くおんがく。
