Carl Maria von Weber composed a number of pioneering works for the operatic stage as well as incidental music whose highly attractive scores combine Classical principles of clarity with a unique lyricism and orchestral mastery that would inspire later Romantic composers. This disc presents overtures from his ever-popular Der Freischutz, Euryanthe and Oberon, as well as from other undeservedly lesser-known operatic works, alongside concert pieces such as the Jubel-Ouverture and Der Beherrscher der Geister, and the incidental music for the plays Preciosa and Turandot, all of which amply display his vivid and refined dramatic imagination. 　指揮者のアントニ・ヴィトは、Naxos レーベルにたくさんの優れた演奏を録音しています。特に同郷ポーランドのペンデレツキやルトスワフスキは他の追従を許さない名演ぞろいです。では、ロマン派のウェーバーはといえば、これもきっちりと要点を押さえた手堅い演奏です。ニュージーランド交響楽団が、機能的できびきびとよい演奏をしています。　このCDには、他にはあまり録音の少ない劇付随音楽「トゥーランドット」からの音楽が収録されています。聴いてみれば分かるとおり、ヒンデミット作曲の「ウェーバーの主題による交響的変容」の第2楽章の主題はこの曲からとられています。ここで聴かれる東洋風のちょっと変わった主題を、ヒンデミットがどのように料理して変容させているか、聴き比べてみるのも面白いと思います。

ナクソス・レーベルの看板指揮者の一人であるポーランドの重鎮アントニ・ヴィト。基本的には堅実な職人肌だが、職人的指揮者にありがちな頑固さとか融通の利かない感じは少なく、なだらかさと柔軟性を備えているのが彼の特徴と言える。いい感じで鄙びた味わいもあって、安心して聴ける指揮者である。このウェーバー序曲集は2006年7月13~15日、ニュージーランドの首都ウェリントン、ウェリントン・タウン・ホールでの録音で、オケはニュージーランド交響楽団。『魔弾の射手』や『オイリアンテ』など知名度の高い序曲だけでなく、あまり知られていない若書きの作品も収録されており、コスパ的にもお買い得。ドイツ的な重厚さとは一味違う、スッキリとして明晰な演奏である。聴かせどころもよく分かってユニークで楽しい。音質が非常に良好なのも特筆もので、まるでコンサートホールの客席の最前列に居るかのような臨場感を味わえる。
