The Others

The problem with most modern scary films is they're simply not scary, there's not atmosphere of terror, no real attempt to disturb you, simply a few sudden scares that might make you jump, but no real desire to unnerve you. So if it's truly scares your after then look no further than Alejandro Amenabar's The Others, a film that from the start sets out to unsettle and unnerve you, and succeeds admirably. Nicole Kidman stars as Grace Stewart, a mother with two young children, living in an isolated country house, waiting for her husband to return from WW2. The children suffer from a rare disorder, they cannot be exposed to direct sunlight, if they are it could kill them, Grace is obsessed with keeping them safe and keeps the house shrouded in darkness at all times, all doors must be locked and all curtains drawn at all times.
Awaking one morning they find that all the servants have left the house and that everything is locked away, as Grace tries to find out what's happened a new group of servants arrive and offer to work. As the days go on, strange events begin to happen, glimpses of strange people and strange sounds plague the house, a thick fog envelopes the whole area and seems to have no intention of leaving. As events around the house get stranger and more dangerous Grace is forced to try and find out what is causing all of this to happen, a decision that brings her face to face with a shattering truth?
