Max Rostal (1905-91) was the most brilliant of the students who studied with the great Carl Flesch. His career as a soloist did not take off as one would have predicted for such a wunderkind. Although his temperament was fiery and sensuous as a young virtuoso, he developed a more intellectual almost detached quality as he matured. It is this aspect of his genius that is captured on this disc. A much loved teacher, he urged his pupils to always research the composer, looking at his life and background, and encouraged students to gain as wide a knowledge of a composers total output as possible. He also claimed that most published editions were not to be relied on, and if at all possible, students should study the urtext. ( Brilliant Classics )
