太陽王ルイ14世時代、フランス宮廷音楽家として活躍したフランシス・クープラン。音楽が社交の場で添え物的に扱われている現状に飽きたらなかったクープランは、その当時の作曲家の多くが多作家であったことを考えると、大作曲家としては作品の数が少ない部類であり、完全主義的感性の当然の帰結と言えましょう。このCDには、彼のそうした個性の真骨頂とも言えるクラヴサン曲が収められています。
