コルレオーネ・ファミリーは本拠地をニューヨークからラスベガスに近いタホー湖畔へ移っていた。縄張りを狙っていたハイマン・ロスの手下ロサト兄弟から襲撃され難を逃れたマイケルは、偉大な時代を生きた父ビトを想う。父ビトは母を殺され、難民としてアメリカに来た後ファミリーを築いていく……。

マイアミでファミリーのボスたちの会合を持った後、マイケルはキューバへ赴き利権獲得のため工作を図るが、兄フレドの裏切りに気づく。やがて犯罪調査委員会の公聴会に呼ばれたマイケルは裏切り者のペンタンジェリに証言を覆させて追求をかわすが、妻のケイはマイケルから離れていく……。
