Dowland: Complete Lute Music (4 CD)
Jakob Lindberg, lute
Digital Recording: 1994
John Dowland was the eccentric and brilliant lutenist who left England to become one of the most renowned musicians in Europe at the beginning of the 17th century, having the ear of kings and princes in Germany and Denmark.
His poignant set of Lachrymae for viol consort has long been prized, and Sting recently brought his melancholy songs to a worldwide public. But perhaps the most representative legacy is what remains of Dowland’s considerable output for his own instrument: a hundred or so pieces, mostly dances but always coloured with the directly affective temperament that has continued to appeal to listeners centuries after their composition.
Gramophone praised Jakob Lindberg’s complete recording when it first appeared as ‘a considerable achievement that will be warmly welcomed by lovers of this music.’
Extensive booklet notes by Jakob Lindberg including details of the instruments used.
