これはすごい演奏ばかりです。ベートーヴェンの第5番・第6番、いろんな演奏を聴いてきましたが、若き日のマゼール先生は、奇をてらうことなく、ベルリンフィルの力を存分に引き出し、コントールして、テンションの高い音楽を作り上げています。後年のクリーブランドとの、テンション低めの演奏とは、全然別物です（これはまた別の意味で面白いのですが。。。）。ブラームスの第3番も、なぜ第3番を選んだのか理由は分かりませんが、この難曲を、美しく再現し、見事にまとめあげています。そして、ローマの松、ベルリンフィルを巧みにドライブし、実に格好良い！こういうBOXが発売される時代になって、本当に良かったです。

一部の録音はヘリオドールのLPなどで、聞いた記憶がありますが、今回DGの音源をまとめて聴くことができ、大変ありがたいです。どうもマゼールはテクニシャンに走り、表面的との声もあります。しかしこの若い頃の録音はいずれも、切れ味が鋭く、かといって表面的に流れるでもなく、曲の魅力をよく引き出していて、感心しました。録音も予想以上によく、このボックスは大正解でした。フリッチャイのボックスに続いて、DGの企画のヒットでした。
