イギリス空軍創立70周年を記念して制作されたアルバムで、戦争映画(特にイギリス空軍をテーマにした)の主題曲を中心に空軍や空に関係する楽曲を収録したCDです。 演奏はイギリス空軍中央軍楽隊、指揮者はダンカン・スタッブス中佐。 同軍楽隊は吹奏楽編成が通常だがこの録音ではバンド編成や管弦楽編成をとっている曲がある。 ほとんどの曲が空軍軍楽隊の得意とする曲ばかりで、その颯爽として力強い演奏はお見事の一言につきますが、その中でも特におすすめなのが、『空軍分列行進曲』と『アラビアのロレンス』で前者は空軍軍楽隊のテーマ曲とも言える曲、これは同曲の中でも白眉の出来と言える物、後者は映画音楽で、ここでは原曲通り管弦楽編成での演奏、しかし片手間の持ち変えの中途半端な物ではなく、一流オケが演奏した演奏と肩を並べる位密度の濃い充実した演奏です。 またこのCD録音が大変素晴らしく、楽器が鮮明かつ力強くとらえられたその優秀な録音は、バランス重視で金管の音量を意図的に下げ、メロディ楽器を目立たせた録音の多い日本のメーカー(特に楽譜出版社系の)には出せないサウンドですし、見習うべきでしょう。 尚、2トラック、チャーチル元首相の演説に音楽を被せた物があります。
