1962年、ブライアンがビーチ・ボーイズとして初めてレコーディングを行ったハリウッドのキャピトル・スタジオにて録音制作！昨年夏のこと、1949年の名曲「ラッキー・オールド・サン」を口ずさんでいたブライアン・ウィルソンは、この時今回のアルバムを生むきっかけとなるユニークなアプローチを思いついたという。さっそくこの曲のルイ・アームストロングのヴァージョンを買った彼は、バンド・メンバーであるスコット・ベネットと一緒に詞を作り、旧友ヴァン・ダイク・パークスの手を借りて、活気に満ちた語り形式の物語を創作することを思いついた。
