Bartok's only opera is an intense drama, involving only two characters and underpinned by a rich orchestral score. Bluebeard's young bride persuades him to open seven doors in his castle to let the light in. Behind each door she finds increasingly disturbing sights, until the final door opens to reveal the castle's secret and her fate.

ロッテルダムを踏み台に西側に進出してきた有能なビジネスマンでもあるゲルギエフ、現在、レパートリーは、ロシア物中心、近現代物に、フランスもので、ベートーヴェンやブラームスには、いまだ、手を出していません(協奏曲があるのみ）。最近は、こう言った指揮者が増え、一時期のデュトアさんみたいです(カラーは全然違います）。現在拠点を、マリンスキーと、ロンドンにしているのは、このオケの、馬力や、挙動性、商売、競争の地であることもあり、正解、と言えるでしょう（自主レーベルの作り方、しっかり学びました）。いつかは、ミュンヘン辺りで、独墺古典物聴かせてくれる日が、来るでしょうが。肝心の演奏ですが、ホラーオペラとしてのサスペンス、しっかり表現し、(あっさり終わりますが）、何より、サ―、となったジャマイカン、ウィラード・ホワイトの声が、雄弁でよろしい。

プロローグが英語というのは、LSOライヴだから仕方ないとはいえ、ちょっと違和感あり。ホワイトがそのまま青ひげを歌い始めてしまうのも、プロローグの視点は客観的なものなのでマズイと思う。しかし、それを除けば大変良くできた上演。ブーレーズの二度の録音のような精緻さは望めないが、オペラ指揮者らしくゲルギエフは緊迫とその後の弛緩の対比がうまい。ホワイトは2008年パリ・オペラ座来日公演でも素晴らしかったが、ここでも見事な名唱(彼の場合、見た目のインパクトが大きいので、一度でも舞台姿を見ておくとCDも違って聞こえるけど)。2003年のケルビーノ以来、新国立ではおなじみのジドコーワも健闘している。ちなみに、バルトークでは『中国の不思議な役人』と並んで最も好きな作品。文句なしの傑作だと思う。
