1940年、ミルウォーキー生まれ。60年代末から本格的にクラブで歌うようになり、75年にワーナーからファースト・アルバムを発表。80年代はブラコンのプロダクションを基盤にした洗練された歌で人気を確立した。『テンダネス』（94年）以後しばらく録音を休止し、96年には初めてブロードウェイ・ミュージカルのステージを務め
