CHARLES VALENTIN ALKAN
Piano Miniatures
Stanley Hoogland, Piano Pleyel 1858
Charles Valentin Alkan (1813 1888) was a contemporary of Liszt, and he was the only pianist for whom Liszt was nervous to play, which is saying something…
Alkan, though possessing colossal pianistic qualities, never gained the fame of the more flamboyant Liszt, and he bitterly drew back from public life, becoming a recluse. He did continue to compose however, and he wrote the most virtuoso piano music imaginable, often even unplayable. Next to the large scale piano works (like a Concerto for Piano solo, and a Symphonie for Piano Solo) he wrote many miniatures, sometimes, simple and sweet, sometimes eccentric and bizar. This disc contain a selection of these works, with titles such as Le premier billet doux, Un petit rien, Le temps qui n á plus, La Chanson de la folle au bord de la mer, en Pseudo Naivité, also the title of this CD, as it characterises the music, which in its simplicity sometimes hides deep secrets.
Played on an instrument from Alkan´s time, a beautiful Pleyel grand piano, with great knowledge and feeling played by Stanley Hoogland.
New recording.
