I’m not a Mehta admirer, but this CD is excellent. The VPO play well and sound great, and they know this music by heart, of course. The sound quality is of a high standard. Some conductors try to make Schumann more profound than he means to be, but Mehta does well to play the music simply as music. That is where the magic comes from. Tempos are well chosen and rubato is used tastefully. You won’t find a better set of these symphonies, certainly not this cheap. The two overtures are a delightful bonus.
