50年代のハリウッド映画『乱暴者』や『黄金の腕』などのサウンドトラックでもドラマーとして名を馳せ、ディジー・ガレスピーやチャーリー・パーカーと活動した有名なビバップ・ドラマーであるシェリー・マンによる、1959年9月にサンフランシスコのブラック・ホークで録音されたライヴ盤全4巻のうちの第1枚目。ジョー・ゴードン（トランペット）、リッチー・カムーカ（テナー・サックス）、ビクター・フェルドマン（ピアノ）、モンティ・バドウィッグ（ベース）が参加し、6曲を収録。ストレート・アヘッドなジャズ・ファンにもお勧めできる 作品でガーシュウィンの「サマータイム」のゆったりとしたテイクで幕を開け、「ブルー・ダニエル」のスウィングするワルツで目もくらむような演奏を聴かせてくれる。
