Born in Tallinn, Estonia, he studied percussion and conducting at the Tallinn School of Music before moving to the USA in 1980, where he continued his studies at the Curtis Institute of Music and at the Los Angeles Philharmonic Institute with Leonard Bernstein. ブルックナーの第6番は第2番とともにあまり聞かなかった曲ですが、最近じっくり聴いて良さがわかりました。はじめてじっくり聴いたのがパーヴォ・ヤルヴィの演奏であったのは幸運でした。
