    実在するジプシー（ロマ）の女性詩人をモデルとした小説。 ゾリは、ナチスの魔の手が迫るスロヴァキアでファシストに家族を殺される。祖父とともにかろうじて逃れる、流浪の日々を送るものの、読み書きを習得し、自らの詩を紡ぎ出すようになる。しかし、読み書きは掟で禁じられていたため、追放されてしまう…。 政治の荒波のなかで、ひたすらに言葉の力を信じ、たくましくも生きのびた姿が印象的。ナチスや東ヨーロッパにおける反ユダヤ問題はそれなりに書かれているが、ジプシーに触れたものはまだまだ少ないだけに、そういった面でも貴重である。
