Juice A-plenty

1920年代からデューク・エリントン楽団のメイン・ソリストとして活動したアルト・サックスの至宝、ジョニー・ホッジス。30年代後半から約30年間、エリントンの片腕として貢献したピアニスト/作編曲家のビリー・ストレイホーン。ふたりの絶妙なコラボレーションを捉えたCDが登場しました。

M-1〜11までは1961年録音のアルバム『Johnny Hodges, Soloist. Billy Strayhorn and the Orchestra』より。M-2を筆頭とするエリントン・ナンバー、そして極めつけのスタンダード曲M-11などを、極上のホッジス節で聞かせてくれます。M-12以降は『Billy Strayhorn Live!!!』という作品から。エリントン抜きのエリントン・オーケストラというべき、実に興味深いパフォーマンスが続きます。(jazzyellより)
