1954年にノーグラン・レーベルから『The Consummate Artistry of Ben Webster』として初リリースされ、ノーマン・グランツがタイトルを『King of the Tenors』に変更し、1957年に新たに設立したヴァーヴ・レコードから再リリースしたアルバム。このセッションでは、オスカー・ピーターソン・トリオが全曲、ベニー・カーターとハリー”Sweets”エジソンが数曲で伴奏を務め、オープニング曲「テンダーリー」からデューク・エリントンの「コットンテール」まで、幅広いレパートリーでウェブスターの芸術性の高さが輝いている。ベン・ウェブスター入門編としても恰好の1枚。
